Active itinerary: Guided tour of the exhibition
In 1923 Nino Barbantini, the brilliant first director of Ca’ Pesaro, organised an exhibition dedicated to ‘Venetian portraits of the nineteenth century’ with no less than 241 works by 50 painters, sculptors and miniaturists, including Teodoro Matteini, Francesco Hayez and Giacomo Favretto. The show was a great success and thanks to it Venetian art of the period was rediscovered, raising awareness of its protagonists. A century later, Ca’ Pesaro is reconstructing that famous exhibition, of which this thematic itinerary gives an account by re-proposing the masterpieces of the most representative Venetian artists of the time, in the light of new studies, updates and re-readings.
Target: 1st and 2nd grade secondary schools, universities
Duration: 1h 30min
Workshop: A self-portrait in watercolour
After a selected visit to the exhibition, which will allow participants to note the constituent elements of the faces, the importance of their proportions, but also the rendering of different emotional states and the language of gestures and posture in some of the works on show, in the workshop they will be given a hands-on experience of the watercolour technique to imitate the masters of Venetian portraiture. Through their own reflection in the mirror, each student will create their own self-portrait to take home in brush and watercolour.
