The Library

The Ca’ Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art is equipped with an important specialized library in particular relating to the art history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Library has been put together randomly over the past 50 years. Almost all books were in fact received by Ca’ Pesaro as a homage on the part of the various national and foreign institutions and are today largely of scientific support to specific collections of the Gallery. In 2001, a process of reorganization and cataloging began in the SBN’s substantial assets (over 11,000 volumes) and a policy on the purchase and exchange of books was established, aimed to its coordination.

Biblioteca di Ca' Pesaro

On the occasion of the public reopening of Palazzo Pesaro in 2002, the Library has started its activities on the mezzanine floor and continues its cataloging works. Due to the richness of its library materials aimed at deepening knowledge on art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (especially on exhibitions in Venice), the Library is regarded as an important reference center for all scholars of Modern and Contemporary Art, both Italian and international.

There is no external or inter-library lending. To facilitate the work of scholars and researchers, there is no limit to the number of manuscript or printed works that may be requested for consultation.

Staff personnel are prepared to provide information and assist the consultation of catalogues, as well as to distribute the works requested for consultation. The on-duty librarian may be consulted for more detailed bibliographical information, assistance in the use of inventories, and research via online catalogues.

Catalogue and collections

Filing cabinets and their relative index cards are located in the reading room. The index system is arranged in such a way that it can be accessed by author, curator, artist, subject, exhibition place or title for quick and easy reference.

The online catalogue may be consulted via OPAC of the SBN Polo Veneziano at the following address: http://polovea.sebina.it/SebinaOpac/Opac.

The Ca’ Pesaro Library contains over 11,000 volumes and pamphlets, as well as a vast amount of other reference material including invitations, press releases, brochures, newspaper articles, etc (the newspaper articles relate mainly to those artists whose works appear in the Gallery and form part of the artists’ archive). The collections are divided into the following main sections: material relating to the Biennale International Exhibition of Modern Art for the period 1895-2003 (general catalogues, brochures for individual pavilions and/or artists); monographs by artists and artistic movements of the 19th and 20th centuries; catalogues from individual and group exhibitions which have taken place in Italy and abroad; auction catalogues; magazines (still to be catalogued).

Prints & drawings cabinet

The collection of the Prints & Drawings Cabinet contains more than 3,000 individual sheets and includes works from the Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa Collection and other collections on permanent loan to public offices. The complete catalogue was published in 2002. The Cabinet documents the graphic work of those artists, from the early 19th century to present day, whose paintings and sculptures are on display in the main Gallery. It is therefore an essential tool for anyone studying the collections.

The collection includes works of the main exponents of European Symbolism, from Whistler to Klinger, Munch to Brangwin, as well as of major French Post-Impressionist artists, such as Bonnard and Matisse, and the Pop Artist Robert Rauschenberg. Among the most important Italian artists represented are Favretto, Ciardi, Nono, Sartorio and, from the 20th century, Alberto Martini, Boccioni, Previati, De Pisis, Arturo Martini and Gino Rossi. Also represented are masters of the Italian post-war period, such as Vedova, Pizzinato, Santomaso and Music.

The collection may be consulted by appointment with the Museum curator.
